The State Income Tax Manager I is either an advanced technical expert who can perform independent planning and audit leadership, or a senior technician with very strong process and people leadership skills.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop, implement, and monitor procedures to gather in a cost-effective manner information required for state income & franchise tax return filing which accommodates changes in company operations. - Lead process improvements internally or with external advisors to -improve data gathering and return preparation efficiency.
• Monitor actual and proposed changes to state income tax filing rules and implement required changes in company reporting procedures.
• Supervise staff with regards to scheduling, monitoring, and review of associated U.S. tax staff state income tax return assignments. - Willing to prepare complex returns as required.
• Train and develop less experienced tax personnel, recruit and ensure adequate staff succession.
• Prepare analyses while developing and presenting arguments to defend company tax position(s) while managing state income tax audit issues.
• Conduct state income tax research and analysis on complex projects as assigned to assess the effect of the state income tax law on company operations and recommend appropriate course of action.
• Provide state income tax and related tax accounting support to the broader tax team, including state income tax audit coordination and state income tax planning.Qualifications:
  • Managerial and tax technical experience within a corporate or public accounting environment
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting concepts and state income tax laws
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Self-starter with decision making capabilities
  • Ability to prioritize and work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to contribute ideas to address business issues
  • Ability to take ownership of processes and timely communicate results to supervisorEducation and/or Experience:
    • Bachelor 's Degree in relevant field, CPA, MBA, or MST expected (or country equivalent)
    • 5+ years of experience within corporate state taxation, including multi-state combined reporting structures
    • Ongoing professional development/participation in organizations such as TEI, Chicago Tax Club, COST, etc.
